Dewayne Russell Wiles Obituary

Dewayne Wiles, age 90, of Carson City, passed away August 22, 2024, at Arbor Grove Assisted Living in Alma.

He was born on April 17, 1934, in New Haven Twp., Michigan, the son of Howard and Hazel (Manning) Wiles. Dewayne married the love of his life, Shirley Hagerman, on March 2, 1955, at her family’s home; together they welcomed two sons: Greg and Kevin. He also  served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, Stationed in Fort Lewis Washington.

He and Shirley were members of the First Baptist Church of Carson City. Dewayne was a life-long, hard-working farmer; after retiring, he loved spending his free time doing woodwork, specifically making all kinds of toys for children. He and Shirley spent many years wintering in Florida and travelling. More than anything he loved his family, whom he always put first. Dewayne was one of the first members in the Gratiot County 4H fair for youth 75 years ago.

Dewayne is survived by two sons, Greg (Gwen) Wiles of Middleton, Kevin Wiles of California; three grandchildren, Kate Wiles, Joe Wiles, and Shelley (Rob) Worden; four great-grandchildren, Austin, Robert, Jack, and Trey; great-great-grandchild Kyrie; brother Marvin (Phyllis) Wiles; sister-in-law, Barb Wiles; many nieces, nephews, cousin Pat (Sue) Crawford, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years, Shirley; and brother A.G. Wiles.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Georganne for her kind and caring help in keeping Dewayne in his home, great-grandson Austin for willingly devoting his time to help, the staff of Mid-Michigan Hospice and the staff at Arbor Grove for the excellent care they provided, and all the neighbors who helped, especially Jen, for her daily check-ins.

Per Dewayne’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a memorial gathering to be held September 6, 2024, at 11:00 am, in New Haven Center Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Mid-Michigan Hospice (MyMichigan Home Care 6810 Eastman Avenue, Midland, MI 48642).
