Shirley Mae Buttrey
January 19, 1959 - August 17, 2024
Shirley Mae Buttrey was an amazing Mother, Nana, Aunt Shirley, and Friend who departed too soon on August 17, 2024.
Shirley gained her wings peacefully on August 17, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Shirley was born on January 19, 1959 to Lorene and Carlton (Slim) Maupin in Northern Virginia. Shirley graduated from Thomas Edison High School, continued with great work ethic performing secretarial work, and grew many valued friendships. In the time following high school, Shirley and former spouse (Paul Buttrey) had a beautiful daughter together who they adored. Although their marital status changed, they remained close friends and successfully raised their loving daughter. Shirley would say in all of life's accomplishments, her greatest one is her daughter.
Shirley eventually left her home state and ventured to other places, settling with her family in Texas and enjoying every moment of life on the Ranch. Shirley's unconditional love continuously poured out on the Ranch to anyone in need of it, both four-legged or two. To say she spoiled her fur babies would be an understatement. Through all her travels, she stayed true to her roots and remained a hard-core Redskins fan.
Among a variety of life's activities, Shirley had a distinct passion for dancing. If there was a place to go dancing, especially country dancing, Shirley would be there with her heels on. You could find her "two-stepping" the night away on the
"dance" floor to every country song played by the band, DJ, jukebox, or
radio. Shirley's free spirit loved soaking up the sun on the beach, feeling her toes in the water, walking the boardwalk, watching the waves roll, and absorbing the beauty of it all. Shirley had a contagious enthusiasm for life; from the thrill of getting spooked at Halloween or spooking others, to the love she put into cooking her broccoli casserole for Thanksgiving, to the laughs she brought to everyone while decorating Christmas cookies, and the way she made Easter fun for all. Her capturing smile brightened even the biggest room.
Shirley's legacy will live on through the numerous lives she touched. Her limitless love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. We'll hold onto the memories and stories we shared.
Shirley is preceded in transition from this life by her father, Carlton (Slim) Maupin; her mother, Lorene Maupin; brothers Perry and David Maupin.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Shannon Schwantes (Buttrey) and son-in-law Stephen (DJ) Schwantes. Shirley is also survived by sisters, Lorrie Ann Riley and Sandra Maupin.
Shirley loved all of her family members with all her heart, along with many cousins and such, she is survived by her beloved Aunt Sis (Effie Nash), Aunt Francis Maupin, Sarah Sawyer, and Donald Wayne Maupin.
Shirley will be missed dearly among the several who called her friend, especially by her best friend of 43 years who she is survived by Cynthia Lesko.
Shirley's natural gift to nurture and support brought a few bonus daughters into her path who she is survived by Kristina Maupin, Kristy Bowen, and Tiffany Schwantes (King). Additionally, Shirley is survived by her darling granddaughter, Ashley Crane. As dear sweet Nana, Shirley is also survived by precious ones including Dayton, Genny, and Rylee.
Aunt Shirley had a special connection with so many "littles" over the years as she listened and encouraged each of them along their journey. Aunt Shirley is survived by her dearest Aaron, Carlton, Chris, CJ, Davey, Grace, Jay, John, Kadence, Kaleb, Killian, Leland, Lillie Mae, and Luke to name a few of these nieces and nephews. Some listed are still child aged and some are grown up now, but the memory of Aunt Shirley's unwavering love and inspiration will live in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
We all hope you dance.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately by the family on September 28, 2024. Additional details with respect to the service will be announced once confirmed.
In Shirley's loving memory, plants or flowers may be sent to her home. Information regarding any charitable donations, in lieu of flowers, will be provided as it becomes available.
