August Carl "Sonny" Schug Obituary

Sonny Schug, 87, resident of Scottsdale, Az, and formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away August 17, 2024, after a brief illness.

Sonny was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 26, 1937, to his parents Karl August “Gus” Schug, and Anna K. Angermeier Schug. He had an early and lifelong love of baseball, and was a pitcher for his high school, college and National Guard teams. After high school, Sonny attended Washington University (St. Louis, Mo) and the University of Toledo, attaining his fine arts degree. He then began his lifelong career as a commercial artist, illustrator, and fine art painter. His keen interest in military aircraft was reflected in his vast body of aviation art work. During the 1960s, Sonny served in the Ohio National Guard. He also developed talents as an amateur astronomer, and was a former member and president of the Toledo Astronomical Association.


Sonny is survived by his three children: Kristy (Rodney) Hom, B. (K.) Schug, and Suzy (Bradley) Schug. Also his 4 grandchildren: Alan Hom, S. Schug, Summer Hom, and S.Schug. 2 cousins: Janice Hoyt and Karin McGuire, both formerly of Toledo, sister-in-law Barbara Avenaim of Scottsdale, and former wife Carol Kemp of Scottsdale.


Preceding him in death are his parents, and former wife and lifelong friend, Judy Knisley Schug.


The family expresses appreciation to Hospice of the Valley’s Sherman Home of Scottsdale. Celebration services will be private.
