Norma B. Keller, age 91, passed away on August 17, 2024 at the Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born on July 1, 1933 in Bayport, NY to the late Thomas and Anna (Olsen) Benson. On May 25, 1952, she married her beloved husband Henry Keller. Henry passed away earlier this year.
In her early working years, Norma was employed by the Patchogue Electric Company in the Accounting Department. Afterwards, she spent much of her life as a homemaker, taking care of her husband, children, and home. During this time, she did much volunteer work including: volunteering in the Recreation Department of the Yaphank Infirmary in Yaphank, NY, volunteering as an Assistant Librarian at the American International School in Brussels, Belgium, volunteering in the Recreation Department at Bergen County Hospital in NJ, as well as the Recreation Department of Chagrin Falls Senior Housing.
Norma was Co-Chairman at the Clothing Exchange (a non-profit thrift shop) in Weston, MA from 1982-1997. The money raised by this shop was used for scholarships in local schools, given to police departments for bullet proof vests, and donated to the local library for a new library construction fund.
She was President of the Poquonock PTA in Poquonock, CT and spearheaded the rise in teacher’s salaries with the help of parents, local politicians and a reporter from the Hartford Courant.
She was a Sunday School Teacher in both Massachusetts and Connecticut and was a Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Weston United Methodist Church in Weston, MA where she spearheaded maintenance, reconstruction, and improvements to the church and minister’s house, co-chaired several charity events such as the Weston Charity Ball and Church craft fairs.
When she wasn’t busy volunteering, Norma also loved to work on various arts and crafts projects, tend to her garden, cook, and read. She helped put together some cookbooks for the Weston Ladies Club, and she also received an award for some of her needlepoint work.
She truly enjoyed spending time with her family most of all.
She is survived by her son Trace Keller and his wife Cathy; her grandchildren: Ryan Keller and his wife Bethany, Dr. Erica Keller, Trevor Keller, and Heather Smith and her husband Zachary; her great-grandchildren: Lacey, Thea, Rowan, Sebastian, Theo, Torleif, Lucien, and Sylvan.
In addition to her beloved husband, Norma was predeceased by her son Eric Keller, her brothers: Arnold Stanley Benson and Walter Benson, and her sister Elsie Newhouse.
A Celebration of Norma’s Life will be put on by her family at their convenience.
