Marie R. Schlimmer Obituary

Marie R. Schlimmer, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on Saturday, August 17th, shortly after celebrating her 97th birthday at Our Lady of Mercy in Albany, NY. She graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School and proudly from the former Hudson River School of Nursing in 1948. Marie dedicated over 30 years to Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital. She served in various nursing roles, with the majority of her career spent as the hospital’s nursing supervisor. Marie was deeply proud of her nursing career and maintained lifelong friendships with her classmates and colleagues.

Following her retirement, Marie spent several years providing private home care for various families. She was also an avid cook and baker, known especially for her apple pie and a variety of cookie recipes. Marie loved to entertain at her home and was an active member of the Red Hat Society, where she participated in numerous events and trips. For nearly 20 years, she was dedicated to her fitness routine, swimming and walking with friends most mornings. She also taught exercise classes at a local community center. In her later years, Marie developed a passion for cats and gardening, spending time on her back porch tending to her flowers, watching birds, and caring for neighborhood strays. She attributed her longevity to staying physically active, enjoying good food, and cherishing the company of others.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Joanne Falco, and granddaughters, Jessica and Teresa Falco, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Gustav and Dorothy Wicks Richard; her brother, Gustav “Mort” Richard; her sisters, Dorothy “Sis” Biggio, Joan Seaboldt, and Lillian Williams; and her nephew, Buddy Seaboldt.

The family extends special thanks to her niece, Su, whose support allowed Marie to remain in her beloved home for many additional years, and to the staff of Our Lady of Mercy and the Community Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness over the past year. Cremation and burial of her ashes at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Stray H.E.L.P, P.O. Box 245, Fishkill, NY 12524 (strayhelp.org), or to the Community Hospice, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208 (communityhospice.org).

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc. If you wish to send an online condolence, please visit our website at www.wmgmiillerfuneralhome.com
