Honorable James Curwood Witt, Jr., age 75, long time resident of Madisonville, Tennessee, more recently, Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at UTMC in Knoxville surrounded by his wife and children. James, also known by “Curwood”, was born in Madisonville to parents, Hon. James Curwood Witt, Sr. and wife Gloria, on October 23, 1948. He attended Madisonville High School and graduated in 1966. He then went on to earn degrees with honors from Hiwassee College and Tennessee Wesleyan, before earning a degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Curwood then practiced as an attorney in Madisonville, before being appointed as a judge on the Monroe County Juvenile Court. He was appointed to the State of Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals in 1997, where he served for 27 years, until his passing. Curwood was a jack of all trades, and loved fishing, golfing, reading, woodworking, piano, and was an avid British sports car enthusiast. He was also a faithful long-term member of FUMC in Madisonville, and a faithful attendant of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist in Knoxville. Curwood is survived by his wife, Carole Cavender Witt; daughter, Mary Butler (Eric) of Knoxville, sons, James Curwood Witt, III and John Bascomb Witt both of Knoxville; daughter, Andria Parker (Brian) of Johns Creek, Ga.; his siblings, Kathy Hall of Madisonville and Cindy Wilhite of Knoxville; his grandchildren, Ansley Parker, Luke Parker, Landry Parker, and Valor Parker of Johns Creek, Ga; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hon. James Witt, Sr. and Gloria. Curwood’s family would like to express their gratitude to the host of family friends and colleagues, and the love and generosity they have bestowed upon the family, both through life and during Curwood’s passing. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church of Madisonville on Thursday, August 22nd at 4:00pm with a service to start at 6:30pm, Reverend Chris Black officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Monroe County Animal Shelter, 130 Kefauver Ln, Madisonville, TN 37354. Rose Funeral & Cremation Mann will be handling the funeral arrangements.
