Command Sergeant Major Olbie Giftel Foley passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 17, 2024.

Born on February 7, 1934, he was the only son of the late Loren and Flossie Foley. He had five sisters, who also preceded him in death: Gladys Rexroat, Elmoth "Alma" Tengelitsch, Olive Wilson, Helen VanMeter, and Mary Jewell Tiller.

He entered the U.S. Army at age 17 and served his country for over 30 years. Shortly after enlisting he met his future wife, Annelies, while stationed in Munich, Germany. The two returned to the U.S. to marry and start their family. They had three daughters, Theresa, Lisa, and Donna.

During Olbie's military service he served as a medic during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and Combat Medic Badge. He retired from service at the rank of Command Sergeant Major and was once the commander of the Ireland Hospital at Fort Knox.

In addition to his parents and sisters he was preceded in death by: his wife, Annelies Egner Foley; grandson, Michael Paul Kershaw, father and mother-in-law, Franz and Anna Egner; sister-in-law, Irmingard Baierl; multiple brothers-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Foley is survived by: his daughters, Theresa Smith, Lisa (Will) Coleman, and Donna Foley; four grandchildren: Jason Smith, Renee (Wade) Daffron, Jennifer (John) Stephens, and Joshua (Katina) Kershaw. Eleven great grandchildren also survive.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to noon with funeral services starting at noon.

Pallbearers are: Will Coleman, Wade Daffron, Jr. Smith, Jason Smith, Josh Kershaw, and Drake Daffron.

Burial will be at Mills Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, KY with Military honors performed by the Russell County Honor Guard.
