Rebecca Tucker Obituary

Rebecca Langsford Tucker, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home in Lexington, Kentucky on August 17, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Boston, Kentucky to Walter Stallard Langsford, Jr. and Inez Daugherty Sprigg Langsford on June 2, 1932, Rebecca was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Walter Stallard Langsford, III, and her husband, Ray Edwin Tucker. Rebecca and Ray were married on October 4, 1953.

Rebecca is survived by a sister, Bettye Sue Ferguson, daughters Susan Tucker McEuen and Nancy Lou Tucker Baker (André), son Ray Edwin Tucker, Jr., six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Rebecca was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and community member. She served on the boards of the Lexington YWCA, Bluegrass Home Economists, was a member of UK Faculty Wives, a volunteer with Girl Scouts, and a mentor to other breast cancer patients and survivors. She enjoyed being active and participated in water aerobics groups for many years. Always a strong advocate for women, she helped start a day-care center for young children at Central Baptist Church in Lexington in the 1970s. Her career included teaching Nursery School, Kindergarten, Adult Learning classes, and later teaching Home Economics and Science at Lafayette High School and Beaumont Middle School.

In retirement, Rebecca and Ray enjoyed hosting each grandchild individually for a fun and educational week every summer. “Camp Grumpy” included bike-riding, cooking, wood shop with Grandad, classes at Living Arts and Science Center, and just a break from their parents.

Family and friends will remember the love and laughter present at so many gatherings. Rebecca managed to keep far-flung cousins connected by planning a number of weekends with her brother, sister, and their families every fall.

Rebecca and Ray enjoyed camping and travel, visiting all 50 US states, much of Canada, and several countries in Europe, also spending sabbaticals in Germany in 1978 and Australia in 1987. Their interest in travel was passed on to their children and grandchildren as well as their curiosity about the world and their love of learning.

Rebecca will be greatly missed by her friends and family. A celebration of her life will take place at 2:30 p.m. on September 15 at Milward Funeral Home, 1509 Trent 1 Blvd, Lexington, KY 40515. The family would like to thank Bluegrass Care Navigators for all of their help.
