Wilbur Alan Thomas passed away on August 17, 2024, at the age of 95. He was born July 31, 1929, in Felda, FL, to Mattie and Jesse Thomas. His wife of 50 years, Frances Glover Thomas, proceeded him in 2007.

Wilbur spent his childhood in Felda working on the family farm. He graduated from LaBelle, FL, high school where he played both football and baseball. Wilbur voluntarily enlisted during the Korean war and served as a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers. He then attended the University of Florida under the GI Bill, where he graduated with a Ph.D. in Psychology. This led to a 30-year career as a professor at Rollins College, Georgia Southwestern University, and Albany State University.

He is survived by his children Alan (Julie), Marjorie Schnelle (Karl), Carol Dutton (Doug), Ken (Linda), and Susan (Angus); grandchildren, Brandon Thomas, Joshua Thomas, Pierce Thomas, Holden Thomas, Shiloh Thomas-Wilkinson, Phillipa Thomas-Wilkinson, Tina Dutton, Owen Dutton, and Dillon Dutton; and one great grandson, John Henry Thomas.

Wilbur was an avid golfer who often played against himself, right-handed versus left-handed, on the links. He enjoyed attending multiple golf tournaments, with his favorite being The Master’s in Augusta. He also enjoyed playing the violin and attending musical and theatrical performances.

The family is indebted to his caregivers over the past few years: Tina Dutton, Cord Honeycutt, and Elcie Lubin.

A graveside service will be held to honor and celebrate Wilbur’s life on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 4:00 PM from Carroll Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Felda Baptist Church, 91 North Willis Ranch Road, LaBelle, FL 33935. This is the church that his parents help found in 1923.
