Delbert Norbert Dittmer was born on February 21st, 1948 to Lester and Ina (Ohnemus) Dittmer. He was their 5th child. He grew up on the family farm and worked with his father, brothers, and uncles raising hogs, and purebred Polled Hereford cattle with the 5D&S brand.
He attended Grade School at Rosemount and graduated from Southeast Warren High School in 1966. While in school he was involved in 4-H and FFA. He served in the Army Reserves from 1967-1973. On November 18th, 1972 he married Nancy Ellen Harmon at Rosemount Church. They had 2 children, Missy (Melissa) and Kurt.
He grew up with an impressively large immediate and extended family. This is where he learned ideals and values of commitment, hard work, community service, respect, and love. He quietly, and sometimes not so quietly, passed these lessons on to not only to his children, but to his many nieces, nephews, and then on to his much beloved grandkids: Emerson, Avery, Madeline and Eleanor.
Del led by example and showed us how to commit to service to others and community by being a part of many Boards of Directors, the Lacona Men’s Club, South Central Co-Op, Marion County Cattleman, Marion County Pork Producers, Whitebreast Watershed, Whitebreast Heritage Society, and Marion County Extension Counsil. He was a Marion County Swine Superintendent for many years. Del was always very involved with his kids 4-H and FFA projects and their lives as they married and had their own children. When he retired from farm work, he became a full time very involved grandfather. He attended every possible event for his grandkids, both in Knoxville and Madison, Wisconsin.
Del passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, August 17th. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Dittmer; children: Missy (Molly) Dittmer-Herrmann, and Kurt (Allison) Dittmer; grandchildren: Emerson, twins - Madeline & Eleanor, and Avery; siblings: Ray (Jan) Dittmer, Ruth Konrad, sister-in-law Janice Dittmer, Kathy (John) Harmon, Claire (Judy) Dittmer, Christy (Chris) Ripperger, and Kevin (Phyllis) Dittmer; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents: Lester & Ina Dittmer; infant brother, Keith, brother, John Dittmer, and brother-in-law, Flavian "Peck" Konrad.
