Glenn Cuthrell Obituary

Luther Glenn Cuthrell died peacefully on August 17. He was born on May 10, 1945, in Morehead City, North Carolina, but he grew up in the community of Maxton where his mother was a schoolteacher and his father was a Methodist minister. He made his mark as a ham operator when he was only 12, a pastime that brought him joy until his recent illness kept him from it. He lost his father just before his 14th birthday. He was a pitcher on the Maxton High School baseball team, and later in life took great pleasure in watching his grandchildren follow in his footsteps.

After high school Glenn went to UNC (Go Heels) where he majored in education. There was never any question where his loyalty was during basketball season. While at UNC Glenn met the love of his life and his future bride, Patsy Howell, on the breezeway at Meredith College. He was there with a friend looking for a different girl, but as fate would have it, he found the right one. He and Patsy married in 1967.

After graduating from college, Glenn joined the Air Force. He had a long and successful career as an airman, and was stationed in many places, including Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, England, and Germany. Recognizing his talent, the Air Force sent him to graduate school at Louisiana Tech where he earned an MBA degree. He moved up the ranks in the military and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years, serving as the Commander of Communications at Royal Air Force Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England.

After his retirement from the Air Force, the family relocated to Roanoke Rapids, NC. Glenn spent several years in a new career, working for his father-in-law at Howell Steel Service as a manager in the company. When that business closed, he wasn’t ready to stop working. He returned to his days studying education at UNC and finished up his working career as a schoolteacher with the Roanoke Rapids School System.

One of the greatest blessings of Glenn‘s life were his two sons, Jonathan and David. Jonathan and his wife Corey, and David and his wife Jessica multiplied those blessings with their children Brendan, Jackson, Emma, Shelby, Gracie and Ellie. Glenn spent many happy hours sitting on the sidelines of basketball games, baseball games, soccer games, softball games, and volleyball games, cheering hard and bursting with pride. Those who knew him knew he loved his family, and he loved his dachshunds. That love was returned to him many times over.

Everyone knew him as Pop. He was a son, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a friend who was loved by those in his circle. We will always miss you Pop!

A service celebrating Glenn‘s life will be held at Jamestown Methodist Church on Sunday, August 25 at 2 o’clock. A time of visitation will follow the service.
