It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mrs. Inez Hopcroft Mitchell though we are full of joy that she has been reunited with her beloved husband of 35 years Lewis Washington Mitchell on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the age of 97.

She was born in Cape Haitian, Haiti on July 27, 1927, to the late Earl Edgar Hopcroft and Marie Turcotte Hopcroft. Also preceding her in death is her brother Earl Hopcroft and her sister Sylvia Debo as well as her grandson Justin Whitlock.

Inez was known as Ms. America in her days at Our Lady of the Valley for her smile and wave to everyone she passed and for being the life of the party. We cannot thank her very special caregivers enough for making her time there so enjoyable.

Inez retired from General Electric in 1989 after 20 years of service. She was a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Roanoke, VA. Inez enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to see the world. She also had a beautiful voice and blessed others with her gift.

Those left to cherish Inez’s beautiful memories are her children, Marie Whitlock (Joe) and Robyn Mitchell (Ron Jones) as well as her 9 grandchildren Jeannie Gravelle (Patrick), James Whitlock (Nicole), Alex Nackley (Eliza), Elyssa Nackley (Nate), Meredith Nackley-Henry (Levi), Andrew Nackley (Rachel), Luke Nackley, Bobby and Rachel Jones and 8 great-grandchildren Dalton, Tristyn and Sutton Gravelle. Jaime, Ryker and Emma Whitlock. Maxine Kinsey and Story Henry.

A funeral Mass celebrating the wonderful life of Inez will be held at noon on August 21, 2024 in the Basilica of St. Andrew in Roanoke, VA with a graveside service to follow at Mountain View cemetery in Vinton, VA. There will also be a visitation held at Oakey’s Roanoke chapel 6-7:30pm on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
