Raymond C. Cheston, III, affectionately known as Ray, passed away peacefully at his home on August 17, 2024, with his loving daughter by his side. Born on March 2, 1927, in Newark, New Jersey, Ray's life was a testament to his enduring kindness, humor, and friendliness that touched everyone he met.
A proud graduate of Hillside High School in 1945, Ray immediately answered the call of duty and served his country in the Army, stationed in Germany during the tumultuous times of World War II. Upon returning home, he found love and married his sweetheart, Audrey Joan Drake, on January 13, 1951. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Kathy, who would become one of Ray's greatest joys.
In 1956, Ray and his family moved to Holmdel, New Jersey, where they created a lifetime of memories and where he resided until 2011. His professional life was marked by a successful career as a sales representative for the Masda Corporation, where his charm and dedication earned him the accolade of Salesman of the Year.
Ray's community involvement was as rich and varied as his personal interests. He was a pillar of the Boy Scouts, serving as the camping and activities chairman in Monmouth County, where he inspired young minds with his passion for the outdoors. His commitment to his faith was unwavering, as evidenced by his over 50 years of membership at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Keyport, where he served as an usher and church council member. In his later years, he continued his devotion at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manchester.
An avid golfer, Ray's love for the game was more than just a hobby; it was a way to connect with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and engage in friendly competition. He relished the many golf trips he took with his close-knit foursome, sharing laughs and perfecting his swing.
Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Audrey, who passed away in 2009, and his second wife, Norma Huss Brown, who passed away in 2020. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his daughter, Kathy Caruso, and her husband, Louis; his cherished granddaughters, Yana (Ben) Kacon and Inna Caruso; and a community of friends who will miss his warm presence.
Ray's life was one of service, love, and laughter. He was the kind of man who could light up a room with his humor and whose kindness was felt by all. His friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure in his community and an endearing friend to many.
As we say goodbye to Raymond C. Cheston, III, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of joy, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and community. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
