Melinda Whitaker Atkins, age 96, a resident of Central Continuing Care in Mt. Airy, formerly of Siloam, went to be with her Lord & Savior on August 17, 2024.
Ms. Atkins was born in Moore County, NC on August 18, 1927 to the late Burley Clay Whitaker & Sadie Slawter Whitaker.
She was “The Avon Lady” for years in & around Siloam. She won many awards & recognitions for her sales accomplishments. Ms. Atkins, along with her sister, Bessie, made many beautiful quilts. As long as she was able, she had a quilt in the rack & she sat humming softly & quilting. She was a life-time member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Donald Ray Atkins; a brother, Landis Whitaker; sisters, Rosa Whitaker Potts, Bessie Whitaker Ashburn & Leona Whitaker Putnam; son-in-law, Ricky Bobbitt; & Carlie Atkins, father of her children.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sue Atkins Bobbitt; & two brothers, Harold Whitaker & Melvin (Martha) Whitaker. She also leaves behind her grandchildren & great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family, Christie, Zachary & Colin Baumann, including nieces, nephews, cousins, so many special friends & neighbors in & around Siloam.
A funeral service for Ms. Atkins will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Shane Nixon officiating.
