Evelyn Vernell Nelson Hinton, 98, transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday August 17, 2024 at the Pruitt Rehabilitation Facility, Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh, N.C. She was received into the Kingdom, by the Heavenly Father and magnificent Angels of our Lord and Savior. She was welcomed home by her beloved sons Roderick Edward Hinton, and Donald Leon Hinton.
Evelyn was born November 21, 1925 to parents Grady and Annie Vivian Nelson, of Whitakers, North Carolina, Edgecombe County.
She was the third eldest of seven siblings, five of whom preceded her in death. The last surviving sibling is her sister Mrs. Hazel N. Logan of Raleigh, N.C. Evelyn A.K.A. “Shorty Nelson” was a loving child, mother, sister, aunt and friend. Auntie was authentic…what you saw is what you got…full of laughter, humor, and she gave it as good as she got it!! Did not mince any words. She brought great times to our family gatherings!!!
Evelyn Vernell was baptized in Whitakers and was a long-standing member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church where she sang alto for many years. She had a beautiful voice.
“Shorty” finished High School at Bricks School in Whitakers and ventured to Civella’s Beauty College in Raleigh, N.C.in the 1940’s located at 400 East Martin Street, where she received her Cosmetology License. Evelyn returned to the family home, quiet country life, and converted her Father’s Barber Shop, into a Beauty Salon where she served the Whitakers community doing hair for the next twenty plus years.
Ms. Evelyn loved children and proudly cared for her children and Hazel’s at the family home while tending to the land growing vegetables, fruits, and tending to Ms. Annie V’s flowers …. good down home country life in a beautiful community of friends and family. Life was good!!
Evelyn joined her sister Hazel in Raleigh caring for their mother, Ms. Annie V until her death at the age of 102. Bringing joy, love, and laughter to others, she continued as a care giver with her sister at the” Loving Arms Day Care”, operated by Mrs. Hazel Logan.
Evelyn “Shorty” loved the Lord, her family, and community. She attended Tupper Memorial Baptist Church and Mt. Peace when she resided at Winters’ Haven on Martin Street and enjoyed senior citizen life in that community housing facility. Through the years, she also attended the Martin Street Baptist Church with her sister and family celebrating Church events and family milestones. During her visits to Whitakers and Rocky Mount, with her son Donald, Evelyn had great “family time” with grandson Devon and all the Rocky Mount family. Laughter, family love, and joy were those things “Auntie” placed as priorities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Grady Nelson, Sr., five siblings, Ruby, Grady Jr., Nathaniel, Charles, and William and two sons Roderick and Donald, granddaughter, LaShauna, and great grandson, Tyrell Hinton. She leaves a legacy of love and joyfulness to her only sister, Mrs. Hazel N. Logan, Raleigh, N.C.; Grandsons Eric Devon Hinton (Jennifer) Rocky Mount N.C.; Duane Underhill (Pam); Jarvis Hunter, Shreveport, La.; Daughter-in-law Gloria C. Hinton, Whitakers, N.C.; niece, Vivian Logan, Raleigh, N.C., nephew, Gregory Logan (Dannette) of Raleigh, N.C.; nephews Ron Nelson of Durham & Reggie Nelson of Missouri, Joanie Speight of Raleigh, N.C. six great grandchildren; Sherrell, Destiny, Joi, Eric, Keshawn, E’Shanti, Jasmine, and Jadynne, and six great-great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends.
