Joseph Parker McCain Jr., a dedicated servant to his country and community, passed away on August 17, 2024, at the age of 75. He was born July 18, 1949, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Joseph Parker McCain Sr. and Ruth Magdaline Woods, Joey spent the majority of his life in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a beloved resident for over 60 years.


At the young age of 19, he answered the call of duty and served as an Army medic during the Vietnam War, where he spent 18 months providing critical care to his fellow soldiers. His commitment to saving lives continued long after his military service, as he embarked on a 37-year career as a Firefighter/EMT. Joe served both at Oceana Master Jet Base and Norfolk Naval Air Station NOB, eventually rising to the rank of Fire Captain for the Heavy Tactical Rescue Team at Norfolk Naval Base. His quick, decisive actions and exceptional life-saving skills earned him numerous awards and the respect of all who served alongside him.


Joey was not only a hero in his professional life but also a pillar of his community. For 40 years, he was an active member of the Ocean View Democratic Club, where he contributed to the betterment of his neighborhood and the city he loved.


Christmas held a special place in his heart. Each year, he transformed his home into a winter wonderland, rivaling Clark Griswold, bringing joy to all who passed by. One of his favorite things at Christmas was that he loved buying his nieces Christmas dresses. Joey loved all his nieces and nephews very much. He had a helping hand to raise them and that was a highlight in his life. Joey’s home was always a place of warmth and welcome, open to friends and family alike. . His love for the outdoors was equally evident, as he spent countless hours fishing, crabbing, camping, and most importantly, watching his grandchildren grow.


He leaves behind his loving wife, Linda McCain, who was his steadfast partner in life. He is also survived by his sons, Justin and Josh; daughter, Jackie (Shane), cherished grandchildren: Darrin, Allie, Mason, and Eli, sisters :Judy Appeal, (Jens) Jeanie Cloninger ( Dave) and Jackie Jackson, nephews: Jarred and Jerald, niece's: Jilli, Jazz and Jenna., and many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jerry, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms.


Joseph Parker McCain Jr. will be remembered as a man of service, a loving family man, and a true friend to all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
