Ms. Doris Campbell Allen Obituary

Ms. Doris C. Allen was born on January 8, 1950 in Lee County, South Carolina to Dorothy and the late Ralph Campbell. She departed this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at the MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center in Camden, South Carolina.

Growing up, Doris was educated in the public schools of Lee and Sumter Counties, and moved to Columbia to further her education in teaching at the University of South Carolina after graduating from Eastern High School in the late 60s. Not long after graduating and getting her degree from USC in 1971 would she become an educator herself, and would go on to teach at various schools throughout her 25+ years as a teacher. First, she landed a job as a special education teacher in Berkeley County, then a few years after completing a masters program at the Citadel in 1973, she moved back to Columbia to begin what would become an 18 year career as an educator in Lexington School District Two. When she left LSD2 in 1996, she joined Richland School District One, and was working a full time position at Crane Creek Elementary School in Columbia when she retired in 2000.

Speaking of Columbia, which was her home for most of her adult life, she became an active member of the Francis Burns United Methodist Church, where she joined a group of other accomplished women known as The Marquettes. This in addition to growing up at Mt. Sinai AME Church in Lynchburg, which she would return to many times with her daughter and grandchildren during her adult years.

After retiring from public education, she dedicated her free time to being around her family and friends. Her grandchildren were her biggest joy during her retirement years, as she would have them come visit her for pizza on Fridays during the 2000s. Doris was extremely blessed to have the family she had, as even when health challenges made it hard for her to live on her own beyond 2011, she had the love and protection of her family all the way up until her time to be with the lord and Christ came.

Along with her father, Doris was predeceased in death by her maternal grandparents, Arnett and Hazzle Coker, and her younger half-brother, Edward G. Lindsey. She leaves to mourn her passing her mother, Dorothy C. Campbell, of Lynchburg, SC; her daughter, Carmen Allen-Carree, of Blythewood, SC; a granddaughter, Lindsey N. Allen; three grandsons, Jared S. Carree, Adam M. Carree, and Kolin C. Carree; a great-grandson, Aries M. Carree; a great-granddaughter, Aurora J. Carree, along with many cousins, friends, and other people who will miss her dearly.
