Steven Newbrough passed away peacefully at his home on August 7, 2024 surrounded by his family after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. Son of Fritz & Deke Newbrough of Lake City. Steve was 71 years old.
Steve grew up in Lone Rock, Iowa and graduated from Sentral High School in 1971. He then married Laurie (Marlow) in 1972. Steve attended lineman school in 1973. He began his electrical career at Greene County REC’s appliance center in 1974. About a year later he started as an apprentice lineman for the coop and worked his way up to working foreman in 1985; assistant line superintendent and staking technician in 2005; and became Midland Power’s superintendent in 2014. He retired at the end of 2016 after 41 years of service.
Steve and Laurie lived in Spencer, Lone Rock, and Jefferson before moving to Boone, Iowa in 1979. They lived in Boone for 25 years where they raised their family on an acreage. In 2005 they moved back to Jefferson for 5 years. In 2009 they moved to an acreage just outside of Ames. In 2019 Steve & Laurie moved to Lake Panorama on the golf course.
Steve’s hobbies included spending time with family and friends, racing horses, golfing, concerts, snow skiing, trips to Mexico and Florida and cheering on his favorite teams which included: New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones.
Steve was an avid horse trainer for over 20 years. He raced thoroughbred horses in Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri and Prairie Meadows. He had the very first thoroughbred win at Prairie Meadows in 1989.
Steve is survived by his wife Laurie of 52 years, his daughters; Nikki & (Marc) Anstine of Altoona, Iowa, Heather & (Mark) Swan of Huxley, Iowa. Six grandchildren; Kennedy, Kade, Presley, Kole, Kason & Kora.
His parents; Fritz and Deke Newbrough of Lake City, sister Sherry (Keith) Lampe of Lake City, Iowa; brother Larry (Melva) Newbrough of Guthrie Center, Iowa.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on September 21st at Lake Panorama National Conference Center from 1-4pm with a short service at 1:30pm. Please join the family in celebrating Steve’s love of sports by wearing your favorite team’s attire.
