Joshua Lane Riggle Obituary

Joshua Lane Riggle, 33, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 4, 2024. His family will receive friends 3-6:00 pm Sunday, August 11th at Iles Westover Chapel where funeral services will be held 1 pm Monday, August 12th.

Josh was born on December 2, 1990 to Lane Riggle and Kathy Winter-Riggle in Denver, CO. During this first year, Josh moved to his beloved hometown of Des Moines, IA, which led to a lifetime of pride and affection for his city. Josh attended Edmunds, Callanan and Roosevelt in the Des Moines Public School District, and was deeply passionate about how this rich and diverse experience formed his life. While at Roosevelt High School Josh excelled on the football field, building on his years of youth sports experiences and living as an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Iowa State Cyclones, Indiana Pacers and Chicago Cubs. While football was a primary focus, Josh’s greatest strength and passion was always building deep and plentiful friendships. Josh graduated from Roosevelt in 2009 and was voted “Man of the Year” for his senior class. After high school, Josh continued his football career for 3 seasons at Wayne State College, before transferring to Iowa State University.

Josh then began his career in the service industry, which proved to be a perfect fit for someone with big shoulders and an even bigger heart. Josh worked for several restaurants, country clubs and businesses in Des Moines, serving in multiple management positions. The service community in Des Moines became another arm to Josh’s network of family and friends, and he was constantly filled with love and pride from his dozens of colleagues. Outside of work, Josh spent hours diving deep into his passions for history and politics. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge on history and current events, and he had a deep passion for progressive political causes, and in his last few weeks of life Josh was overjoyed with the possibility of the first female US president through his excitement for Kamala Harris. Through all of life’s journeys, Josh was deeply committed to his family and friends, as a loving son, brother, uncle, grandson and nephew, and he spent his entire life closely connected to his best friend and older brother Nathan.

Survivors include his mother, Kathy (John) Ritzler of Des Moines; father, Lane Riggle of Des Moines; siblings: Nathan (Jo) Riggle of Des Moines, Amanda (Brad) Huber of Colorado Springs, CO, Kyle (Loralynn) Riggle of Ames; nieces and nephews: June and Hank, Ian, Will, Brayden, Neil, Shine; grandmothers: Margaret Winter and Marilyn Riggle; aunts and uncles: Diane (Mike) Reidle, Lance Riggle, Lex (Sarah) Riggle; and his partner, Megan Martin.
