Raymie was born to Raymond Styons Sr. and Rosalie Brown Styons in Plymouth on November 20th, 1957. He graduated from Plymouth High School as a three-sport athlete before going on to play baseball at East Carolina University before he was drafted by the San Diego Padres organization in 1980, later returning to get his bachelor’s degree from ECU.

Raymie played three seasons of minor league baseball before retiring and coming home to work for his father-in-law at F&D Motor Company in Bethel. He then worked in insurance for Nationwide for 27 years, owning The Styons Agency for 25.

He built a decorated career as a basketball official at the same time, spending 35 years in the Atlantic Coast Conference and officiating 20 ACC tournaments and 17 NCAA tournaments. He’s remembered as a highly respected and dedicated official by his fellow officials, the conference, schools, coaches, and players.

His love for both his children and sports led him to be involved with coaching many different youth teams. Raymie coached his daughters, Lindsay and Sarah Grace in softball, and his son, Trey, in baseball before coming back to Greenville Little League to coach Brown & Wood in the mid-2010’s. He will be remembered for dedicating and mentoring countless children not only as baseball players, but as young men.

He was an inspirational man to his family and the Greenville community and beyond, who left a memorable impact on anyone who met him. All three of his children currently work in insurance, as Raymie did. Trey followed his footsteps into an officiating career, also officiating basketball in the ACC, and they had the privilege of spending a handful of games together on the court. All three are also involved in coaching, Lindsay coaching her two children with Sarah Grace alongside her, and Trey as part of the Brown & Wood team for many years.

Raymie is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Spencer Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Gilliam Styons; Son, Raymond Earl “Trey” Styons III, and wife, Caroline; Daughters, Lindsay Styons Harris and husband, Rodney, and Sarah Grace Styons Johnson and husband, Dylan; Stepdaughters, Haley and Kelsey Mosley; Grandchildren, Kyle and Raegan Harris and Graham Styons; Parents, Raymond Earl Styons Sr., Carlene Styons and Rosalie Brown Styons; Sister, Lisa Styons Harrell and husband, Walter.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Greenville Little League and the Pitt County Girls Softball League. Donations for PCGSL can be made payable to Pitt County Girls Softball League, PO Box 639, Winterville, NC 28590.
