Charles "Ed" E. Blackwood Obituary

Charles E. “Ed” Blackwood peacefully completed his journey to heaven at age 90 on July 29, 2024. Beside him was his loving family and Wanda, his wife of 44 years.  Ed was born in Elkins, WV to Clarence and Ila Blackwood on January 21, 1934. Ed enjoyed honorably serving his country for 21 years in the Air Force, including tours of duty in Germany, Thailand, and Vietnam. Following retirement, he served 20 years as a deputy for the Medina county sheriff department.  After his second retirement, Ed and Wanda were ready to settle down and enjoy their “blended family” of his four sons and Wanda’s three daughters, then grandchildren. They spent many winters in Florida, and every summer for over 20 years enjoying a week at Lakeside Ohio with family.  At times they traveled to Texas, Colorado, and other places to tour and visit daughters. They often took trips to Elkins, his hometown, to visit his parents and relatives, including favorite cousins Mary Ann and Herbie.

Ed was a loving father to both sons and daughters. He was passionate about hunting and fishing through years of living on military bases while living in the States. Competition was fierce, challenging his sons Chuck, Jeff, Greg and Steve at fishing, basketball, or any sport. All sports were exciting to Ed. (They say he didn’t take a loss well! ). Ed was proficient in these sports having played on basketball and baseball teams in former years. Ed was also involved in the girls’ events. He kept busy transporting Julie, Bonnie and Susan to summer church camp and Julie to college. He successfully coached a summer league softball team in which Susan and friends played. The team loved him and fondly called him "MR ED” (like the horse)! His grandchildren were a delight. His special buddy, great grandson Harley, who called him “BIG Papa” visited regularly and they often ate out together.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ed is survived by his wife, Wanda; sons, Chuck, Jeff (Janice), Greg (Pam), and Steve (Julie); daughters, Julie (Bob), Bonnie (Chip), Susan (Derek); his grandchildren Corey (Brynn), Dru (Rochelle), Kris (Melissa), Dessa (Garrett), Laccie (Adam), Kassandra (Daniel), Jacob and Samuel; and six great-grandchildren.

Ed will be laid to rest at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery on Monday, August 5th, officiated by Pastor Morgan Annable of Grace Lutheran Church, in a Christian service followed by military honors.
