Roberta R. Urban Obituary

Roberta (Robbi) R. Urban, 87, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away on July 29, 2024. Robbi was born and grew up in Cottage Grove, a small town in Oregon. Robbi was a West Coast girl with a winning smile. After graduating from the University of Oregon, she moved to San Francisco and worked as a secretary for Standard Oil of California. Robbi met her husband, James (Jim) G. Urban in San  Francisco, where Jim interned following his graduation from medical school at the University of Wisconsin. Robbi was always willing to try new things and visit new places. Jim and Robbi married in 1961. As an Air Force wife, Robbi spent four years in France, where two of her four children were born.

Jim and Robbi lived in Washington, DC for Jim’s surgical training and three years of Orthopedic residency in Denver. They concluded Jim’s Air Force obligation in California, returning to civilian life in Denver in 1972 with their four children. Robbi became involved as a volunteer in school activities and parent groups, Junior League, and charitable and church organizations. When the children became older, she entered the workforce in 1981, initially as a policyholder service employee in the home office of Life Partners Insurance Group. Robbi excelled at the work and was quickly invited to enter their Executive Training Program. She advanced to become the Vice President of Human Resources. The company bought several other Life companies and eventually was acquired by Conseco. She elected to retire rather than moving to the Midwest.

After Jim retired in 2000, Jim and Robbi spent winters in Rio Verde, AZ, moving there full time in 2007. Robbi continued to volunteer, on community and country club committees, enjoying golf and an active social life. In 2020, they moved to Vi at Grayhawk, a Continuing Care Retirement Community, which allowed them to continue social, cultural, and volunteer activities with a new set of friends.

Robbi was predeceased by her son, Patrick. She is survived by her husband Jim, and three of her four children, Elizabeth (Betsy), Holly, and Scott; and ten grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vi at Grayhawk Residents’ Foundation, 7501 E Thompson Peak Parkway, Scottsdale AZ, 85255.
