Kenneth Earl Rogers Obituary

Kenneth Rogers, 83, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at his daughter’s home in Sugar Land. A memorial service and celebration of life will be organized for a later date.


Ken was born to William Perry Rogers and Erma Mae Ellis Rogers on May 11, 1941 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He attended school in Nacogdoches graduating from Nacogdoches High School in 1959. He played clarinet in the band and was involved in theatre productions. He began his undergraduate studies at Stephen F. Austin. Upon earning his B.A. in English in 1963, he began his graduate studies at Southwestern Theological Seminary. Kenneth served as the Associate Pastor at Gatesville First Baptist Church and then as pastor of First Baptist Church in Moody, Texas. He then became the circuit Director for the Baptist Student Union organizations of McLennan Community College, Temple Junior College and Texas State Technical Institute. Kenneth returned to Stephen F. Austin to get his teaching certification and began a career as an English teacher. He taught at Smiley High School in Houston, Westfield High School in Houston, Lone Star Junior College as an ESL teacher and added driver’s education training to his resume towards the end of his teaching career. Kenneth has been a member at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas in recent years. He was active with his Sunday School class and participated in the Bountiful Blessings food bank ministry. His interests included his family, movies, travel, his two cats and picking up every pecan he could find. People were always begging for his peanut brittle. Ken also spent the last 8 years providing care to a special needs adult, Tomas, who called him Granddaddy.


Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents, William Perry Rogers and Erma Mae Ellis Rogers, and his precious granddaughter, Ellison Leigh Lindsey.


Kenneth is survived by his daughters, Jana Gaffney and her husband Patrick Gaffney, Kendra Lindsey and her husband Rod Lindsey, and Laurel Churchman and her husband Paul Churchman. He is also survived by his grandchildren – Audrey Hackett, Samuel Lindsey and his wife Alexis, Magness Lindsey, Marin Lindsey, Nathan Churchman and Wyatt Churchman. He has one beautiful great-grandchild – Rosalyn Ellison Lindsey and another to arrive next March. Kenneth is also survived by his brother, Billy Rogers and his wife Sue Rogers and a sister, Lynn Musgrave. He was fond of his nieces and nephew – Billy Rogers, Renee Rogers, Donna Lynn Musgrave, Diane Musgrave and Debbie Lou Musgrave.


Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas.
