Carol (Niemala) Mellette passed away on July 28, 2024, at her home with her son, Max, at her side following a courageous battle with cancer.

Carol was born on April 12, 1950, in Escanaba, Michigan, to Reino and Toini (Linjala) Niemala. She grew up in West Rock, Michigan, and was a 1968 graduate of Rock High School. Carol went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Northern Michigan University and began her career in medical technology in Petosky, Michigan.

Upon meeting her future husband, Gary Mellette, she moved to Joshua Tree and built a life full of many interests and activities, including gardening, hiking, ballet classes, yoga, skiing and traveling. One of her favorite places to visit was Hawaii, which filled her with a sense of peace and tranquility that she enjoyed sharing with her friends and family. While Carol built her life in California, she always found ways to maintain strong connections with her family, cherishing every opportunity to visit and reconnect.

Carol's greatest joy was the birth of her son, Max. Motherhood became her life's central focus. Carol also enjoyed working as a paraprofessional at local schools, supporting students with special needs. Upon her retirement, she immersed herself in supporting the Mojave Desert Land Trust, where she volunteered to do seed cleaning to help protect and preserve native plants. Carol's life was a testament to her love for family, nature and community.

Carol is survived by her son, Max Mellette, of Sunnyvale, California, along with her brothers Alan (Mary) Niemala, of L'Anse, Michigan, and Tom (Sandy) Niemala, of Kingsford, Michigan, and sister Joanne (David) Amis, of Gladstone, Michigan. Joanne traveled to California several times to care for her ailing sister. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins and was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, parents, in-laws and brother James Niemala.
