John Melvin Smith, Jr. Obituary
John was born September 22, 1974 in Southfield, Michigan to John Melvin and Wilma R. Smith, Sr. He died August 25, 2018 at Henry Ford Hospital at the age of 43.
John was the beloved husband of 11 years to Lizz Giuffrida Smith .
John attended Pitcher Elementary School, Taft Middle School and Renaissance High School. John went on to attend Northern Michigan University for three years in Marquette Michigan. He loved EVERY minute of his college days. John's parents were both Educators/Administrators with Detroit Public Schools and made sure he received the best education.
It’s obvious to EVERYONE who knew John....that he was raised by an amazing family. He had constant love and support from his family.
If you met John once or knew him for decades......he changed you. John made all of us wanting to be better people. That smile or silly laugh could fix anything that ailed you. Saying he was infectious......does not even begin to explain his powers.
He not only made friends where ever he went.....he made life long friends.
If you met John or knew him....you instantly fell in love with him. Besides his love of people....his love of sports was unparelled. He could tell you who won 1958 Curling Champion Game....and what their uniforms looked like.
Over the years John worked for Paychecks, Matt Prentice Restaurant Group, Fox Sports and Henry Ford Hospital. He was SO proud of the time he spent at Fox Sports as Production Assistant. Those game days....were some of the happiest times of his life. The way he described being in the truck or on the field "miking" up a player.....brought him unbelievable joy. He moved on again to work for the Matt Prentice Restaurant Group which gave him yet another giant group of family and friends.
His reputation followed him to Henry Ford Hospital....where another group of entire strangers completely fell in love with him.
His devotion to his family and friends will never be matched again by another human. His capacity to give love and joy on a daily basis was in his DNA. The only ill feelings he had in his heart was directed at Ohio State University when played the final season game with the University of Michigan and any type of octopus or squid.
The only way to accurately explain John…...is a perfect exquisite gift. All of us THOUGHT we knew how lucky we were to know and “experience” John. And trust me it was ALWAYS an experience. But now that light is gone…...we are completely breathless. He knows his soul and spirit have touched us….and he will hope we keep that FIGHT SONG going in everything we do, every day. Spartans this means you to.
Hail hail John Smith…..you will always be our precious gift.
