His grandparents, uncle, and hired hand lived together in the farmhouse, and operated a dairy. He learned about chores early. In his teen years, Charles played the saxophone in the Borgia School band. He also played alongside his father in the Elks Marching Band. Charles graduated from St. Francis Borgia High School in 1960. Charles had 3 passions, beer, farm tractors, and motorcycles, respectively. Charles planned to be a farmer after his father, but the family doctor, Dr. Post, urged him to go into the medical field. Charles moved to Minneapolis, MN and graduated from the College of Medical Technology with dual certificates in lab and X-ray. He was hired by the ILGWU to be a driver and X-ray tech for their mobile unit serving garment workers in several states.
During a family visit, his younger sister, Betty, introduced him to a co-worker at Delta Airlines and they dated briefly before he moved to Memphis, TN to work for Interstate Blood Bank in 1965. A letter romance followed and he married Phyllis Good on October 15, 1966 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bascom, OH. The couple lived in Memphis for five years before they moved to a house in Bartlett, TN. He worked for Cargill Corn Starch plant for seven years. He then worked for the Shelby County Health Dept until he retired in 2000. After retirement he did brush mowing for several companies in the Memphis and Northern Mississippi area.
In 2002 the couple moved to Washington, MO to help care for ailing parents. Charles enjoyed meeting new people, telling stories and making people laugh. He was always content when he had a beer in his hand. Charles never lived in the past or expressed any regrets.
