Thomas E. Haynes Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Edward Haynes, aged 71, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at his home in Sutton, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 21, 1953, in Worcester, Tom was the son of Walter and Cecelia Haynes. He graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic High School in 1971, and attended Assumption College.

Tom and Marie were happily married for 38 years. He was a devoted husband, father, Grampa, and brother.  In his early life, he developed an incredible ability to build, fix or solve any problem.  He was known as the go to guy for his family and friends. There was no limit to his talents as a carpenter, electrician, mechanic, and plumber. “If Grampa can’t fix it, we’re all screwed.”  Tom enjoyed fishing, tinkering with projects, and researching his genealogy.  He participated in the Sutton Volunteer Artillery Company.  However, he found the most joy spending time with his grandsons at his home on Lake Singletary.

Tom is survived by his wife, Marie (Rourke) Haynes; their daughter Katharine Jacques and her husband William of Sutton, and his beloved grandsons, William, Owen and Colin.  He also leaves behind four siblings: his brother Stephen and his wife Lissa Haynes of Holden; his sister Kathryn and her husband Robert Hunter of Sutton; his brother Tim Haynes and his partner Sandra Sawyer of Holden; and his sister Elizabeth Haynes and her partner Mark Boisseau of Worcester; two nephews Colin and Daniel; and a niece Michaela.  He was predeceased by his niece Erin Hunter.

Tom’s family wishes to thank the staffs at Dana-Farber and Notre Dame Hospice for taking such great care of him.

The funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 2, at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. Burial will be private.  There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168, or to his nephew Colin’s Tap Cancer Out Charity fight,(Colin Haynes Tap Cancer Out).
