Dwight Shaffer, 68 of Danville, entered eternal rest on July 26, 2024. He was born on June 27, 1956 in Bedford, Pennsylvania, to the late Gladys Viola (Manges) Lyell and Ralph Shaffer. Dwight married the love of his life and best friend, Jo Young on May 29, 1976 in Louisville, Kentucky. They were the true definition of love, devotion, and dedication and were a team in every aspect of their lives. When Dwight was a young child, he fell ill with rheumatic fever, and his mom prayed if He let Dwight live, he’d be sure he lived his life for the Lord. And that he did. Dwight went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Sacred Literature at Louisville Bible College. He spent the next 49 years and the rest of his life as a pastor, which was never a career, but his true calling. Beginning as a young intern and youth minister at Owensboro Christian Church in Kentucky, and Eastside Christian Church in Clarksville, Indiana. He then became a lead pastor serving at Kinmundy Christian Church in Illinois, and Ogilville Church of Christ in Columbus, Indiana. Dwight and Jo spent 12 years at Boulevard Church of Christ which would then become King’s Way Christian Church in Charleston, WV, and this is where they raised their family. Dwight and Jo moved to Blountville, TN where they spent 22 years at Blountville Christian. In 2022, he had the absolute honor and privilege to serve as lead pastor at New Brunswick Church of Christ in Lebanon, IN. While only here for a short time, this church was “home”, and he was so proud and thankful for his church family. Dwight was a true leader with a servant’s heart. The lives he touched are immeasurable and the love he shared will never be forgotten.
If you knew Dwight, you knew he loved golf, his Louisville Cardinals, and his Chicago Cubs. He and Jo loved attending any sporting event they could, and he loved any opportunity to talk sports with his son, Dave. He looked forward to his annual Reds/Cubs game with Devon and Josh and it was one of his favorite traditions. Dwight loved to travel, and he especially enjoyed any opportunity he had to go on mission trips to Mexico.
Dwight’s greatest blessings were his children and grandchildren. Dwight had a way of making each of them feel as if they were his favorite, and the arguments of who actually was will never end, even though everyone knows it’s actually Amanda, his loving daughter-in-law. He had that gift of making everyone feel special, but his favorite title was “Buddy” and his grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved when we were all together and he could take the grandkids to “Breakfast with Buddy”. He enjoyed every precious moment he had with his family and was so proud of each and every one of them.
Dwight was also a Chaplain with Marketplace Chaplains and he was so thankful for the opportunity to minister to people through that role. He was also an original board member for the “Build a Better Blountville” initiative and was so thankful to be so involved in the community there. Dwight dedicated his entire life to serving the Lord, sharing the Word, being a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a devoted friend to many. A dear friend recently said, what a reunion it will be for Dwight in heaven to see the people that he helped lead there.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” Timothy 4: 7-8.
Left to cherish his memory are his beautiful wife of 48 years, Jo Shaffer of Danville; son, Dave Shaffer and wife, Amanda of Brockport, New York; daughter, Devon Jo Powell and husband, Joshua of Cincinnati, Ohio; his “girls”, Lilyann, Kenna, and Sydnie, and his grandson, Corbin; siblings, Barry Shaffer of Corydon, Rachel Begley and husband, Bryan of Covington, KY., Mary Florence of Louisville, KY.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends who were like family and his cherished church family. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Shaffer; mother and stepfather, Gladys and Jimmy Lyell; sister, Carolyn Stewart; and in-laws, Charlie and Jean Young.
Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 pm on Thursday, August 01, 2024 in the New Brunswick Church of Christ. A memorial service will begin at 6:00 pm in the church with Pastors Tom Peters and Tom Mullins officiating.
