Thomas "Cleve" King, 82, of Hartland, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2024. Born on June 6, 1942, in Pontiac, Michigan, Cleve was the youngest of Richard and Helen King’s three children.
In his younger years, he was a proud member of the National Guard Reserves, serving during the Detroit riots and volunteering as a firefighter and storm spotter in his community. His commitment to preparedness was an embodiment of his protective nature.
Cleve exemplified the spirit of a self-made man, beginning his career in the tool and die industry and eventually founding two successful automotive manufacturing and supply companies: Michigan Rod Products and Ultimate Manufacturers Incorporated. His remarkable work ethic and determination allowed him to retire in his late 40s, after which he devoted himself to his family, his farm and a life filled with adventure.
An avid outdoorsman, Cleve found joy in hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. His adventurous spirit led him to pilot aircraft, and his collection of Harleys, sports cars, and recreational vehicles showcased his love for the thrill of exploration. Family trips to Lake Michigan and South Dakota hunting excursions with his grandchildren were highlights of his life, creating lasting memories for those he loved.
Cleve was a man of integrity, a true patriot who lived life on his own terms. He was a dedicated family man who believed in the importance of hard work, generosity, and taking chances -- values he imparted to his children and grandchildren. Known for his tough exterior, Cleve also had a soft spot, which he revealed more in his later years, showing that true strength sometimes lies in vulnerability.
He is survived by his loving spouse of over 50 years, Carolyn King; his children Heather (Matt) Paul, Jason (Jenni) King, Carrie (Rob) Jellison, and Beth (Matt) De La Cruz; and his cherished grandchildren Mason, Betty, Konlan, Denton, Cara, Neely, Weston, Bruce, Keller, Ava, and Matias. Cleve is also survived by his sisters, Ellen Schumborg and Peni Cheer.
Cleve's legacy as a protector, a provider, and a man of integrity will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life open house will be held at a time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either:
Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
Both charities Cleve often supported.
