Richard Gomes Obituary

Richard “Richie” Anthony Gomes, age 93, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024 while in hospice care with his loving family by his side.  Richie was born in the Fox Point section of Providence on October 7, 1930, and was the son of the late Bessie Sarganis Gomes.  

Richie was married to his beloved wife Constance Grenier Gomes for over 50 years.  Richie and Connie most recently lived in Warwick, RI but spent most of their lives together in Providence, Cranston, and Hollywood Florida.  He loved living on the beach in Hollywood and would spend hours on his balcony gazing at the ocean.  

Richie served in the US Army, was employed by the City of Providence for over 25 years in Code Enforcement Division as a Housing Inspector, appointed as the prosecution coordinator of the Providence housing court and a member of Local 1033.  Richard also owned a ceramic studio, where he instructed students to create their own ceramic artwork and worked for the ACI Woman’s division teaching ceramics.  He was an active member of the community he grew up in and was inducted into the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame.  He loved to help train his late brother Chubby Gomes who became Jr. Light Weight Champion of the World.

Richie was the proud father of Edward Gomes of West Warwick, Lisa Mitchell of Westerly, Richard Gomes II married to Wendy Gomes of N.H., and Nicole-Crystal Gomes of Cranston.  He was the grandfather of Paul, Richard, and Anthony Manfredo; Trevor, Luke and Sam Gomes; and Tia Sanzaro.   Also, he had four great grandchildren: Paule, Jordan, Arianna and Haily. Richie leaves behind two sisters; Diana Macomber and husband Steven, and Nanci Sarangis.   He was proceeded by his siblings, Alfred, Harold, Norman, Loretta, and Georgianna Gomes. Richard took pride in his family and will be loved by all forever.

Calling hours will be held in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston on Friday August 2, 2024 from 8:30-10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mark Church Cranston on Friday August 2, 2024 at 11:00am.  Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery Cranston. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to Special Olympics or Fox Point Boys & Girls Club of Providence.
