Robert E. "Bob" Castro, a lifelong Staten Island resident, cherished family man, and respected tradesman, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 26, 2024, at the age of 81.
Born on September 10, 1942, to the late Nunzio and Constance Castro, Bob was known for his loving nature, thoughtful demeanor, and passion for life. Bob's journey began in the heart of Staten Island, where his robust laughter and kind spirit were cultivated. After completing high school, he dedicated many years to trade school, mastering the art of plumbing. His exceptional skills led him to a 60-year membership with the plumbers union, where he was highly regarded by his peers.
In 1974, Bob's expertise was recognized by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, where he served as a civil service pipecaulker. His work was not merely a job but a craft he performed with unparalleled pride and perfectionism.
The essence of Bob's life was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of many years, Alice Castro, and their three children: Lisa, Robert M., and John Castro. Bob's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica, and Johnny, who will carry forward his teachings and love. His supportive presence will also be greatly missed by his daughters-in-law, Mary and Maria Castro. Bob's sister, Frances, and her husband, Joseph DeMartino, will forever remember the bond of sibling love and friendship they shared. Bob's passion extended beyond his family and career. His love for classic cars was evident, particularly for his favorite, the '49 Mercury, which he restored and maintained with great care.
Bob's hands, so skilled in his trade, were equally adept at preserving the beauty of automotive history. Those who knew Bob can attest to his unconditional love for family and friends. Always the first to offer help, his presence was a source of comfort and strength.
Bob's love was a beacon that guided his family through life's challenges, and his unwavering support was the foundation upon which they built their dreams. Described as loving, thoughtful, and passionate, Bob lived a life that embodied these traits in every action and word. He was a man who listened more than he spoke, and when he did, his words were filled with wisdom and kindness. His laughter was infectious, his advice sought after, and his company cherished.
Bob Castro's life was a testament to the enduring power of love and dedication. As a family man, a tradesman, and a friend, he enriched the lives of those around him. His memory will be treasured, his contributions to his community revered, and his spirit will continue to inspire.
A man of few words but many actions, Bob's legacy is not just in the structures he helped build or the cars he loved so dearly, but in the hearts he touched and the lives he shaped. His life was a blueprint of integrity, hard work, and devotion—principles that will continue to guide his family for generations to come.
As we say farewell to Robert E. Castro, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved.
