OPELOUSAS ~ Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, 2024 at a 1:00 p.m. Liturgy of the Word in Melancon Funeral Home of Opelousas, for Marie A. Fontenot, age 88, the former Marie Arthurine Bergeron, who passed away Friday, July 26, 2024 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas.

Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.

Mrs. Marie Fontenot, born November 9, 1935, was a native of Leonville and lifelong resident of Opelousas. She was a parishioner of Our Saviors Church in Opelousas. Marie was employed by Dr. Joe Wilson at Wilson Chiropractic Center and also was a caretaker for several people in her community over the course of many years. Marie was a pillar of support, a friend to many, and a true embodiment of community spirit. Her legacy is one of unwavering support, kindness, and love. As we remember her, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless lives she touched through her generosity and care.

Survivors include her son, Carl Brent Fontenot and his wife, Susan, of Opelousas, her daughter, Brenda Faye Fontenot Landry of Thibodaux; daughter-in-law, Paula Fontenot of Opelousas; two sisters, Barbara Bergeron Cummings of Duson and Rita Meche of Leonville; her grandchildren, Alisha Fontenot and her husband, Bobby, Dylan Fontenot, Ashley Landry, Bradley Landry and wife, Jennifer, Lyle Landry, Dawn Furca and her husband, Brennan; eight great grandchildren, Isabella Old, Sloane Fontenot, Evie Fontenot, Jackson Duplantis, Rowan Landry, Myka Landry, Saylor Anderson and Kennedy Furca.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oren Fontenot; her parents, Arthur Bergeron and the former, Ella Stelly; her son, Drake Fontenot; two sisters, Mary Lou Hebert and Leonie Castille; and two step grandchildren, Jared Fontenot and Carl Cary.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 9:00 a.m. Monday until service time on Monday.
