Louis “Louie” A. Burg 89, of Springfield, formerly of Chatham, passed away at 10:02 pm, Tuesday, July 17, 2024, at his home with his wife by his side. He was born December 24, 1934 in Springfield, to Leonard “Lee” and Elizabeth (Papai) Burg. He married Gayle Ann (Eaton) Patterson on July 11, 1978 and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Kenneth Burg (Debbie Carter) of Chatham; one daughter, Karen (Ron) Alewelt of Chatham; one stepson, Jim (Christy) Mosley of Clinton; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Bernadine Burg of Auburn and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kevin Burg; two brothers, Leonard and Edward Burg and two sisters-in-law, Debbie Shelton and Rosemary Burg.
Louie grew up on a farm outside of Pawnee, IL. After graduating from Pawnee High School, he began his work life as a homebuilder with Frank Siciliano. Due to his diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis, he was no longer able to continue as a carpenter and began a new career with the Illinois Department of Transportation, where he retired in 1996 as a microfilm supervisor.
Louie and Gayle Ann enjoyed twenty-five years as members of the Chatham Chummy Chainers Square Dance Club. Their dancing took them all over the United States where they met many fellow dancers and made lifelong friends.
He was a skilled woodworker and participated in craft shows for many years.
Louie and Gayle Ann were active members of Parkway Christian Church. Much of his woodworking craftsmanship can be seen throughout the sanctuary of the church.
Louie led a long and fulfilling life. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Visitation: 4-6 pm, Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. An additional visitation from 10-11 am, Monday, July 22, 2024 at Parkway Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Monday, July 22, 2024 at Parkway Christian Church with Pastor Marsha Funneman officiating. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
