Dorothy E. Greif 97, of Ankeny, IA, passed away July 16, 2024, at The Bridges in Ankeny.

Dorothy was born December 20, 1926, in Birch Tree, MO daughter of Roy and Wrena (Watson) Smotherman. She moved to Iowa in 1941 at the age of 14. Dorothy was united in marriage to Gerald J. Greif on January 6, 1945, in Grimes, IA. They moved to a farm in Warren County in 1948 where she lived until 2003 when she returned to Grimes.

Dorothy enjoyed life on the farm as well as her office jobs of 45 years at Bell Telephone, Banker Life, Farm Bureau, retiring from Peoples Bank in Martensdale, IA in 1997.

Family was very important to her. Christmas was always a special time with her family. She enjoyed traveling to many places, especially trips to Branson, MO with her sister Maxine. Visiting much of the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas.

Dorothy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Martensdale, IA for 55 years, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and served on the Church Council as Treasurer. She returned to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes in 2003.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald of 49 years in 1994, two sisters Vesta (infant) and Maxine Morgan, two brothers Bob and Ed Smotherman.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Gary (Brenda) of Prole, IA and Gordon (Mary) of Eagle Grove, IA, three grandchildren, Tony (Nicole), Scott (Canda) and Stacie (Felipe), seven great grandchildren, TJ, Morgen (Tyler), Dakota, Macy (Nicole), Kaylea (Marco), Colton and JJ, one great great grandson Bentley, one Godchild Alice Knoll of Grimes and many nieces and nephews.

She was very proud of her 5-generation family.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2024, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. A private burial for the family will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
