Redella Marie Timm was born November 24, 1932 in Woodbine, KS to Ralph and Ruth (Bovey) Timm. She attended grade school in Woodbine and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School, Chapman, KS. Redella and Warren Hettenbach were married on September 17, 1950. Their home near Enterprise, Ks, was blessed with four children: Gary, Larry, Cindy, and Sandy. Warren passed away March 22, 1968.
Redella was widowed with 4 children, ages 14 and under, to raise on her own. She produced feeder pigs and crops to support her family. A big garden helped provide more tomatoes than the kids wanted to eat and they sold many to the A & W in Abilene to help. Redella was often found staying up until 2 or 3 A.M. pitting cherries or working up apples so they didn’t go to waste. She made applesauce pops that her grandchildren loved and her fruit pies were a work of art! Redella worked the farm and also was a cook at Chapman High School. In those busy years, Redella still managed to be an active member in EHU, 4-H Leader, Classroom Field Trip Volunteer, active church member and Elderly Care provider.
Redella met Bob Lay while he was laying carpet for her mother, Ruth’s. Ruth was happy with the job. The carpet was laid correctly, but she thought the carpet layer spent too much time talking to Redella. Bob and Redella were married December 27, 1980. This marriage blessed Redella with two additional daughters, Lynn and Patti, and their families. After their marriage, Redella helped Bob lay carpet in many homes in the area. Redella had fond memories of those homes on drives around the communities. After moving to Abilene in 1987, Redella maintained one of the prettiest yards in town. Plants and flowers always thrived under Redella’s care. So many friends and family have African violets started by Redella’s green thumb. Bob passed away June 15, 1999.
Redella moved to Frontier Estates in December 2018 and enjoyed living there. She loved playing pitch, potluck dinners, cinnamon rolls/coffee cake hour, exercise class, Wednesday give away tables, and great companionship's of apartment living. Many remember her for always walking to stay in shape and her friendly greetings.
Redella was always a hard worker and a happy person in spite of the hardships life handed her. She will be remembered any time a hummingbird flies by or a flower blooms.
Redella was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ruth (Bovey) Timm. Husbands Warren Hettenbach and Bob Lay, son Gary Hettenbach, brothers, Robert (Nina), Richard (Peggy), and Roger (Nancy)Timm, and daughter by choice Patricia Reidy. Survived by brother Ron (Karen)Timm, sisters Regeina (Roy, deceased)Travelute and Rhea (Everett, deceased) Kolling, son Larry (Stephanie) Hettenbach, daughters Cindy (Mitch) Staatz, Sandy (Alan) Heigele, Lynn Jacobson( Roy, deceased), daughter-in-law Pam Hettenbach (Gary, deceased), son-in-law Glen Reidy (Patti, deceased), 14 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Eisenhower Park Rose Garden as Redella loved her visits there.
