Br. Douglas Soik, OFM Cap., was born in Alpena, MI on February 13, 1948, the son of the late Jerome Soik and Celia Haske. Upon graduating from Alpena High School, he entered the United States Navy earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on April 26, 1971.
Br. Douglas began his life with the Capuchin Franciscans in September 1973, at St. Lawrence Seminary in Beacon, NY. After completing his novitiate he made his First Profession of Vows in August 1975 and made his Perpetual Profession of Vows in July 1979. He pursued studies at the Ramapo College of NJ and received a degree in Sociology.
Br. Douglas was very committed to social work and enjoyed ministering in various parishes. While working with Catholic Charities he received an award from the NAACP for the promotion of civil rights. He was also devoted to the Secular Franciscan Order and served in various capacities. He greatly enjoyed gardening and working outdoors.
Br. Douglas was called to eternal life on July 15 after a long battle with cancer. He is predeceased by six of his siblings: Jerry; Connie; Mark; Karen; Norbert; and Gordon. He is survived by three of his sisters and their spouses: Eunice Scott (Richard); Lucy McCabe (Ron); and Bernice Soik; along with three generations of several nieces and nephews.
A wake service will be held at St. Lawrence Friary, 180 Sargent Ave., Beacon on Thursday, July 18 beginning at 4 pm and concluding with a prayer service starting at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Lawrence Friary on Friday, July 19, at 11 am followed by the burial at the friary cemetery. A repast will be offered at the conclusion of the burial.
