James was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 3, 1955 to Richard Eugene and Margaret (Rodell) Brittain.  He grew up in Indianapolis but lived overseas as his father was in the military. After high school, James enlisted in the Army and served two tours in Germany.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving 13 years, earning rank of Sargent. James married Mary E. Cohrs in Gardner on December 21, 2003. They became parents of sons Matthew and Michael.  James was an over the road truck driver for Trans Am Trucking, retiring in 2009. He enjoyed riding his Harley and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and KC Royals. He liked drag racing and NASCAR. James had a passion for car and truck shows and entered several over the years. He was devoted to his family and loved family trips to Branson. James was always ready for a barbeque with family and friends. He believed his home was an open door for any of his children’s friends that needed a place to stay.  James had an amazing belief in Jesus Christ. He was a member of American Legion LeRoy Hill Post 19, Gardner, Kansas and active helping with disabled veterans. As James would always say “Hakuna Matata and be happy”!
