Angela M. Houlihan, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, at her home in Saugerties, NY, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 15, 1947, in Bronx, NY, Angela’s life was a testament to her selflessness, passion for education and community service, dedication and love for her family and beloved friends.
Angela’s spirit was characterized by her love for her family as her children were her life’s biggest accomplishment. She was a cherished mother to her sons, Thomas (Barbara) of Albany and Brendan (Eileen) of NJ, and daughters, Megan (Michael) Aceto of CT and Caitlin (Kevin) Twomey of Palenville. The true joys of her life were each of her six grandchildren: Dennis, Thomas, Keira, Caitlin, Michael, and Maggie. Angela’s sister, Camille (Dale Ford) Vitale, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear in-laws also survive her. Angela was predeceased by her loving husband, Dennis, in 1987, parents Gennaro and Carmela Vitale, and her brothers, Alphonse and Gennaro.
Angela’s formative years in the Bronx were the foundation of a life dedicated to learning and teaching. She graduated with honors from Mercy University and later earned both her master’s degree and educational administration certificate from Fordham University. Her commitment to education led her to a fulfilling career that began at St. Catherine Academy in the Bronx from 1969 to 1973, followed by St. Mary of the Snow School in Saugerties from 1973 to 1982. Angela’s leadership skills shone brightly as she took on the role of principal at St. Joseph’s School in Kingston from 1982 to 1988. She concluded her illustrious career as a beloved Spanish teacher and Dean of Students at Saugerties High School from 1988 to 2010, where she left a lasting mark on the lives of countless students.
Angela’s passion for teaching was paralleled only by her devotion to her students and colleagues, evident through her active involvement in the Saugerties Teachers’ Association, Saugerties Schools Retired Employees Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. An active traveler, who was happiest at the beach or in Barcelona, some of the best memories from Angela’s career were traveling to Spain and Europe with numerous groups of Saugerties High School students. Beyond her professional endeavors, Angela was rooted in her community. She served as the President of the Saugerties Girls Community Club, worked as a volunteer at The Well thrift shop and within local food pantries, and was a dedicated parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her to serve as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, member of parish council and community action, and coordinator for Baptisms and Communions.
Angela’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to her family, her students, and her community. Her life was a beautiful reflection of the words of Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Angela did countless small things with the greatest of love, leaving an impact that will be felt for generations.
