COLUMBUS – Roger Yike, devoted husband and loving father, passed away July 8, 2024.
Born in Lackawanna, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph S. Yike and Frances R. Yike, and sibling of brother Douglas and sister June. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilyn Yike and one daughter, Stacy. His eldest daughter, Brenda, passed away in 2022.
After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in English, he served a short stint in the US Army. Roger started his professional life as a journalist for the Greenville News, living in Clemson and traversing the backroads of South Carolina to ferret out the best stories. He transitioned to Milliken in 1961. In his 35 years at Milliken, he expanded relationships with the major tire industries as well as NASA, while living in South Carolina, Ohio, and Georgia. Upon retirement, he and Marilyn returned to North Carolina. He loved traveling the back roads and reminiscing about his early years as a journalist.
Roger made his home in five different states and was a dedicated community member in each. He served on the vestry in the Episcopal church, served on the county planning commission, and established Clemson Clubs. His largest volunteer effort went to the United States Pony Club where he volunteered for forty years at the local, regional, and national levels. He conducted leadership training, announced at competitions, led local clubs, and served on the Board of Governors. Frequently referred to as “the voice” of Pony Club, he received multiple accolades including Founders and Legends Awards.
Roger brought smiles to all who met him through his quick smile and sharp wit. He freely shared his amazing heart, spirit, and generosity and left trails of goodwill across the country.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2024, in the Chapel at Tryon Estates.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Roger’s name to his two most passionate causes, the United States Pony Club and Clemson University.
