Howard James Foster Obituary

Howard James Foster, 57, (September 12, 1966 – June 11, 2024) departed this life much too soon.

Born and raised in Plainfield, N.J., “Howie” left an indelible mark on the lives of others. His love for music, fashion, travel, and showing up for others – family and friends alike, were ever-present themes throughout his life. Generations of mothers were blessed to hear from him every Mother’s Day; and birthdays and special occasions were moments for something delicious from his kitchen, especially the sugar cookies from his mom’s recipe.

During his junior high school years, Howie swam competitively for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood YMCA, and eventually spent his high school summers as a lifeguard for the City of Plainfield Recreation Department. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1984, where he was a member of the swim team, active in student government, and held numerous leadership and committee positions. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and named an Outstanding Senior in his graduating class. He continued his education at Hampton University and in 1989, he began what would become a thirty-four-year career with the United States Post Office, retiring in 2023.

Howie’s circle was wide and inclusive and therefore, too large in number to list everyone individually. Please know that the family appreciates the love and involvement in his life, and his in yours.

Howie is predeceased by his parents, Henry E. Sr., and Sharon Foster, uncle, Reginald Foster, godmother, Carolyn Gilmore Whitley, and godsister, Kelly Whitley Price.

Surviving him are his brother, Henry E. Jr. (Leona MacFarlane) of Maroubra, NSW Australia, his sister, Marcia Foster (Denise Curry) of Temescal Valley, California; his uncles, Donald (Yolanda) Foster, and Frank Pace, Jr.; aunts, Francine Pace and Kathleen Foster; godfather, Bobby Whitley; godsisters, Kia Whitley-Wright and Kari Whitley-Saunders; his childhood and lifelong friends, Kym Butler Dunn, Alfreda “Poopie” Banks, and Adrienne Freeman Holland; dear friends, Jackie LeGree, Sheronda Jones, and Lucretia Allen; godchildren, Bridgett LaCroix, Darius Jordan LeGree-Lee, and Dranell McFarland, and a host of cousins, extended family, friends, neighbors, and work colleagues.
