Sonora Wiley Obituary

Sonora Ann Wiley, affectionately known as Nora, was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 29, 1955. She was the youngest daughter of Rosa and James Wiley.

Nora graduated from Germantown High School in 1973.  She married the love of her life, Richard Wingfield, after graduation.

Prior to obtaining her Bachelor’s degree from Pierce College, Nora worked as a long-term assistant teacher for Get Set at First Methodist Church in Philadelphia, PA.  She shared her love of music with the children by playing musical chairs to the legendary music of Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight.   She thrived in this position because of her patience and understanding.  It was not unusual for her to take a child under her wing. Nora’s love of children also extended to her nieces and nephews.  She cherished the time spent with them.

One of Nora’s other great loves was math.  She tutored college students in various subjects including trigonometry.  She was known as a math whiz by both family and friends for there was not a problem that she could not solve.

As a child, Nora attended the Garden of Prayer Church in Philadelphia, PA.  Later, she gave her life to the Lord and was baptized at Summit Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA.

Nora passed away on June 13, 2024 at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She was preceded in death by siblings, Love Ramsey, Corrine Bigelow, Suretha Carroll, Rosa Basley Thomas, Mark Basley, Jr., Johnny Basley, and Anthony “Tony” Basley.   She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Lois Scott of Abington PA; her two brothers, George Allen of Macon, GA (Minnie) and Willie Wiley of Philadelphia, PA; a sister-in-law, Joyce Basley of Philadelphia, PA; a special nephew, Robert Basley of Philadelphia, PA and a host of family and friends.
