Elvis W. Summers Obituary

Elvis W. Summers, age 103, of South Elgin, IL, passed away on July 7, 2024. He was born August 13, 1920 in Thompsonville, IL to his loving parents, Edger and Eva Summers.

Elvis grew up in Southern Illinois, before making a home for his family in Elgin and South Elgin. He honorably served in the United States Army during World War II, earning several medals.

Elvis and his beloved, Nyla Mae, were married for 64 years before her death in 2011. He worked for the Elgin Casket Company for 25 years before retiring. He was involved in the making of John F. Kennedy’s casket in 1963.

Elvis had a strong work ethic, and continued to work several part-time jobs after his retirement. He took pride in caring for his lawn, and doted on his dog, Missy. Even at his advanced age of almost 104, he still participated in the neighborhood watch program.

Elvis enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, and watching his favorite teams, the Cubs and the Bears, play. A favorite memory is of his 100th birthday celebration, complete with a parade and many honorary acknowledgements. He even received a one-of-a-kind Cubs jersey with the number 100 on the back.

He was loved by many, and will be greatly missed.

Elvis was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nyla Mae Summers; son, Keith Summers; daughter-in-law, Colleen Summers; and seven siblings. He is survived by his sons, Larry (late Colleen) Summers and Jeffrey (Sonja) Summers; grandchildren, Shannon (Terry) Jeralds, Ryan (Mae) Summers, Josh (Jaqi) Summers, Matthew (Sarah) Summers, and Shawn Summers; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be 5:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday, July 19, 2024, with service and military honors at 6:30pm, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Rev. Matthews will be officiating.
