She was born on April 10, 1935 to the late Classie Graham and Ulysses Garden in Newell, Ga. and received her education in Bethune School for the Colored. Harvey-Knight, Sharon Redmon and Kerry Harvey; her grandson, Antonio "Tank" Harvey; her sisters, Inez Scott, Estell Pollock, Maybell Brown, Johnnie Mae Thompson and Lilus Taylor.
