Ruth Laverne Barnes-Brown, 90, of Cape Girardeau passed away on Monday July 8, 2024 in St. Francis Medical Center at 11:30am.


She was born on September 23, 1933 in West Frankfort to Virgil and Golda (Thomas) Barnes. She was of the Baptist Faith and attended Caldwell Baptist Church. Ruth worked for many years at Barker’s Rexall Drug Store in West Frankfort and in 1960 she served as the president of the Junior Woman’s Club. She married Ernest “Buddy” Brown in 1968.


Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Ernest W. Brown; daughter Marilyn Vogler; and brothers Basil and Kenneth Barnes.


She is survived by her daughter Sherry Brown; son Ernie Lee (Wenona) Brown; brother Jerry (Kathy) Barnes; sisters Mary Ann Barnes and Connie Rowe; grandchildren Kip (Lisa) Brown, Kristi Donaldson, Kasey Cogvil, and Misty Dawn (Kyle) Vogt; 6 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.


Services will be held on Friday July 12, 2024 in the Union Funeral Home at 2:00pm with Rev. Richard Lance officiating. Interment will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be held from 12:00pm-2:00pm prior to the service.
