Verna Lois Smith Obituary

Verna Lois Smith, was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland on April 8, 1939 , the daughter of the late Herman and Mary Smith she was granted her angel wings on Friday, July 5, 2024 in her home. Affectionately called “Lois” by all, she was raised in Havre de Grace, MD, where she attended and graduated from Havre de Grace Consolidated School.

She was employed and retired as a Cook, at Aberdeen Proving Ground, for many years. After what she thought was retirement, she gained another pep in her step. Lois rejoined the workforce with Harford County Public Schools, where she was employed at Roye-Williams Elementary School as Food Service Worker. Lois FINALLY hung up her apron in June 2004.

Lois had many great qualities that attracted many people to her zest for life. She loved to “shoot the breeze” with her best friends Bernice and Doretha. She also had a great knack for one-liners that would often keep people in stitches. Her greatest quality was her heart and care for others.

Lois loved to have fun! Spending time with her family was her greatest joy. She also enjoyed bingo. One could always catch her playing bingo with her sister and best friend, Lilly, on Friday’s at St. Joan of Arc, Bingo World in Baltimore, or playing bingo at the Aberdeen VFW. She also loved to read books, crochet, and cut grass.

Of all the things that Lois loved, she loved the Lord the most. She gave her life to Christ at an early age, and was a member of Union United Methodist Church from birth until she departed this earthly life. As a member of the church, Lois served on many auxiliaries and committees. Her church family will miss her immensely.

While life is so fleeting, we are left to cherish many memories with Lois. Her spirit lives through her children and those who walked through life with her.

Lois, the loving mother of Donna Ballard and Jackie Smith (Monique). She leaves to cherish her memory of one sister, Marlene Speights of Los Angeles, California. A very special sister-niece, Alfrida Wallace and brother-nephew, James “JJ” Lewis. Grandchildren, Antangelo Smith, Jocilyn Harris (Tony), DaVell Smith, LaKeisha Ballard, Courtney Ballard, Jacquelyn Gardner and Darnell Carter. Additionally “Grandma” leaves a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her memory will continue to live on through a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Claude, Herman, Hazel, Barbara, Lilly, and Arithia.
