Barbara Ann Martin Ward Obituary

After 94 years of living in God’s goodness, Barbara Ward met Him face to face on July 9, 2024 at Arbor Terrace of Asheville.

Barbara was the daughter of Nell and Dallas Martin and grew up in Swannanoa’s Beacon Village with her sister, Mary Foster. She completed nursing school at Mission in 1951 and soon after married Wilbur (Wib) Ward. They were married for almost 50 years and had a daughter and a son, Janet Marsh and Bryan Ward.

Barbara helped Wib run Ward’s Drug store for many years. When Wib died, Barbara joined American Red Cross Blood Services and loved every minute of it, retiring reluctantly at age 75.

Barbara was a founding member of Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church (now Valley Hope) and was known as a faithful woman of prayer throughout her long life.

Barbara’s family will miss her: Janet Marsh and her husband Fred; Bryan Ward and his wife Sandy; her sister Mary and Mary’s son Luke Garrison and his wife Donna; grandchildren Rachel Ward Morris, Ezekiel Ward, Kara Monroe; and great grandchildren, Bryan Morris and Joseph Monroe Carney. Her grandson Will Monroe died earlier this year.

Barbara’s family wishes to thank the staff at Arbor Terrace for their unfailing love and safe care for her during her long illness through the end of her life. Contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Arbor Terrace Staff Holiday Fund (3199 Sweeten Creek Rd., Asheville, NC 28803) or to the Black Mountain Home (80 Lake Eden Rd., Black Mountain, NC 28711).

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 10:30am to 11:00am at Harwood Home for Funerals. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at Piney Grove Cemetery.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13
