Joan Hill Obituary

Joan Dora HILL (nee Sunstrum)

Joan Dora Hill passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 7, 2024. She was in her 93rd year.  Joan, a whopping 14.2 lb baby, was born in Osgoode on February 29, 1932 to Silas and Dora Sunstrum (nee Havelin). She was the youngest of 11 children, all of whom predeceased her.  Joan was married to her husband William (Bill) Hill, and enjoyed 46 years together, before his passing in 1997. Bill was Joan’s one and only sweetheart and love. Joan was the loving and caring mother of six children. Her greatest heartbreaks were the passing of her oldest son, Hartley, in 2008 and her youngest daughter, Sharon, in 2021. She is survived by her children Tom (Deb Fleming), Carolyn (Ian Prattis), Eleanor (Ken Kelly), Kevin (Debbie Calcutt), her daughter-in-law Diane Evraire and son-in-law Rob Wallace.  Joan is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Joan’s life was about family and community. She raised her family in Richmond and after her children were all in school, Joan worked in the produce and bakery departments of the local grocery store. A woman of great faith, Joan was active in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and in the community. She continued to reside in Richmond until 2020. Joan was an avid reader, particularly enjoying romance novels. She knitted coat sweaters and mittens, she crocheted, she gardened, she played cards and she was a fantastic baker. She is well known in the community for her cookies, squares, pickles, jams and buns. Joan was known for her kind heart and will be forever remembered by friends and family, including many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to acknowledge Symphony Senior Living, Kanata, for their gentle care of Joan.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joan’s life on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, 67 Fowler Street, Richmond, ON.  A reception in the church hall will follow the Memorial Service and interment.

For those who wish to make a memorial contribution, the family would suggest donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Dementia Society.
