Judith Carol Baltimore, née Wellnitz, born on September 3, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2024, at the age of 86 in Nantucket, MA. A cherished figure in her community, Judy led a life marked by kindness, faith, and dedication to service.
Judy's educational journey at Saint Mary of the Springs laid the foundation for a diverse professional life. She began her career as a chemist at Ross Labs, later transitioning to her role at the Warren R. Baltimore Company. Her expertise in estate planning and insurance led her to attain the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) at New York Life.
A member of Saint Mary, Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church in Nantucket, MA, Judy's faith was a cornerstone of her existence. She lived her Christian values every day, embodying the spirit of giving and community service.
Her commitment to community service was evident through her active involvement in numerous organizations. Judy was a longtime member of the Columbus Ohio Children's Hospital Women's Auxiliary, particularly engaged with "TWIG” 100, helping to raise funds for the hospital. Her leadership roles extended to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges and, the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio. Judy was a member of the Children's Hospital Development Board serving in many roles including Chairman. Additionally, she was very active with her Alma Mater serving as aa Trustee on the Ohio Dominican Board of Trustees for 30 years. After retiring to Nantucket with her husband Warren, she became very active with the Nantucket Hospital Thrift Shop.
As a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, Judy served as a Democratic Committeewoman for many years. Additionally, she worked on several political campaigns including ones for State and US Senate as well as the US Presidential run of Jimmy Carter.
Her personal life was filled with joy and love, surrounded by her family and friends. She is Survived by her children, Warren Baltimore II and his wife Rebecca, Mark Baltimore and his wife Heidi, Robert Baltimore and his wife Mary, and Carol Evens and her husband Erik. Judy also had 8 grandchildren that were her pride and joy. Spending time with Warren III, Joanne, Cooper, Grady, Jack, Casey, Cole, and Hannah had been her joy the past many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Baltimore and her granddaughter, Lara Baltimore.
Entertaining was a true passion for Judy. The door was always open at the house, and she could often be found chatting with friends and family. Always cooking and baking something special. Judy knew how to throw a party! The holiday season was often filled with parties culminating in the New Years Eve party that she and Warren threw. Fine wine, food, friends, and family.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Yvonne Atkinson. Yvonne, it is because of you, that Judy was able to spend her final days in the comfort of her own home. We know it wasn’t always easy, but you took care of mom with great care and dignity. We owe you more than simple thanks. You will always be part of our family.
Judy's life was one of accomplishment. She has left her children in awe of her achievements in tandem with her beloved husband Warren. Individually they were forces to be reckoned with, but together, unstoppable! We are forever thankful for the upbringing we received, and the guidance given. Rest peacefully mom, you and dad left us well prepared!
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on 7/22/2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary, Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church 3 Federal Street, Nantucket MA 02554. Internment will follow the funeral in St. Mary’s Cemetery which is found mid-island, bounded by Vestal Street, Cato Lane, and Hummock Pond Road, and lies adjacent to Prospect Hill Cemetery.
