Bertha R. Hurlburt Obituary

Bertha Rose (Stevens) Hurlburt, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at her  home after a long illness on 7/31/22. Bertha was the daughter of Violet and Leroy Stevens. Born in 1934, she had fond memories of growing up on the beach in Woodmont. Later, she moved to New Haven and West Haven.  “Bert” was married to her husband Donald for 53 years. She is survived by her loving sister Shirley, daughter Leila (James) Edwards; son, Clifford (Paula) Hurlburt, and beloved grandchildren Crystal, Jessica, Dawn, Jeffrey and Douglas as well as many nieces, nephews and Tobiewon her family dog. Brothers Robert and Edward predeceased her. She worked many years with children in daycare, local schools and was a member of the Moose Club and Democratic Party. She loved animals, bingo, country music and, to her husband’s chagrin, horror movies. In recent years, she enjoyed creating monster models and having tea by her favorite tree on the beach in Woodmont. For the past 5 years, she resided at Apple Rehab in West Haven. She recently lost her neighbor and friend, Eleanor Hawley. She loved all her caretakers and understood their heroic challenges during the pandemic. Throughout her convalescence, she always maintained her sense of humor. She wanted to visit “the dinosaurs” at Peabody Museum but, due to lock down, wasn’t able to- she’d like everyone to visit and say hi from Bertha! The family would like to thank all the Staff at Apple for their care and dedication. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Arbor Day Reforestation Fund. Services will be private under the care of Keenan Funeral Home, West Haven, burial to follow at All Saints cemetery in North Haven.
