Margaret Ann Johnston Obituary

Margaret Ann Swayden Johnston, 88 of Amarillo passed away on August 1st, 2022.

Rosary will be said on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 6:00 PM with a vigil service immediately following at 6:30 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 5, 2022, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

Margaret was born on April 10th, 1934, in Brinkman, Oklahoma to Rasheed and Juria Swayden. She was raised in Longdale, Oklahoma, and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. She taught at Fritch, Adrian, Claude, and Amarillo College. Margaret also worked for BNSF and was the bookkeeper at her brother’s pharmacy. After retirement from the railroad, she volunteered at BSA. She always befriended people that needed to be cared for, and she did it with a servant’s heart.

Margaret or “Tooter” as she was affectionately known, loved to cook. She taught home economics for much of her career and was famous for her chocolate and coconut crème pies. She also frequently made Lebanese food, as she knew this would attract relatives from all over.

Margaret was steadfast in her faith and a devout Catholic. Her love of family was her life force.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and eight siblings, Lou Geiger, Dick Swayden, Kelly Swayden, Florine Wilkins, LeRoy Swayden, Tommie Lou Swayden, Bob Swayden and George Swayden.

Survivors include her son Presley Johnston and wife Kristina of Amarillo; daughter Jenifer Williams and husband Chuck of North Richland Hills; five grandchildren, Blake Johnston and Kenzie Castillo of Amarillo, Hagen, Peyton, and Carter Williams of North Richland Hills and one great-grandson due in December.
